Hasselt has 33 Gault&Millau restaurants and three restaurants with a Michelin Star. For such a small city that is a lot. On top of that, Hasselt is very “rock-and-roll” in the kitchen. Proof of that are our ´Jong Keukengeweld` chefs: young chefs who distinguish themselves by their innovative cooking skills.
Hasselt is the Jenever City of Belgium! Names like Smeets and Wissels do probably ring a bell. The American mixologist Jeffrey Morgenthaler estimates this delicacy even higher than gin. Do your own test at the Jenevermuseum or taste them in one of the trendy cocktail bars that experiment with jenever.
Never say 'speculoos' instead of ´speculaas` near a resident of Hasselt. This typical delicacy has nothing to do with the popular crispy caramel cookie. The real 'speklââs' is a big chunk, slightly crispy on the outside and on the inside soft and spicy. And quite addictive!
