De Wijers: land of 1001 ponds

In “De Wijers” nature reserve you can walk, cycle and discover more about the fish and fisheries of the area. The region stretches across Hasselt, Zonhoven, Houthalen-Helchteren, Heusden-Zolder, Diepenbeek, Lummen and Genk. The unique region of 1001 ponds was once excavated for the flourishing fishery industry  - with support from the Herkenrode Abbey.

Walking

Discover the land of 1001 ponds through the long-distance walking route. A 76 km walking route takes you along some wonderful ponds and reed borders of Limburg’s most valuable water landscape. Or why not opt for the 3-day walk of approximately 20 km and discover each day a different part of De Wijers. The handy info brochure that accompanies the walking map will tell you everything about this wonderful region and the various interesting sites on the way. Walking map: 5 euros.

Or go and explore the educational walking route with its bird hides, educational panels and a number of interactive activities. As of April you can even have a bird’s eye view of the ponds without getting on an plane. Climb the 15 metre high watchtower for a wonderful panoramic view of the vast pond landscape.

Cycling

If you prefer cycling, why not follow the Wijer route in the excellent Limburg cycle route network. You can also follow the digital cycle routes that you can easily download as an app for your own device.
